Debatte: ANMUT IRREAL

Film as art of choice La Cienaga again… „Beauty of actors is a disease“ sagt der bildschöne, weil lebendige Filmemacher von Los Fantasmas.

Debate: ANMUT IRREAL
What does stylistic confidence have to do with knowledge and knowledge with lived experience? About graceful and beautiful cinema, which does not have to measure itself against reality and yet cannot shine without a conscious connection to the world. Yet perfection of form is only the beginning. (WDK)
Guests: Sebastián Lojo, Dennis Lim, Hélène Louvart, presented by Devika Giris

Welcome to „The Twenties“… the week of criticism is jumping in the 20’s and we with it.

Yes. Something fundamental has happened here at an extraordinary distance from what was “before”: last year everyone was still asking and comparing questions (e.g. with Schlingensief Conference 2019).
Now, we don’t even answer, we start right away. Like with a jump and in a bowl with bumps.
Note:…maybe this hopping and skipping feeling is a general phenomenon of our time due to the interweaving of information, techniques, skills and ghosts?

Movies of the evening: I saw beauty, beauty not flickering on surfaces, but resting in the depth of bodies. Or breathe coming out of them. As fantastic as the title of the first film was: Los Fantasmas- The Phantoms or Ghosts.
Watching the wrestling match at the beginning, the colours and insignia on the poorish yet, at the same time, glittering of beautiful costumes, I am overcome with great desire… for manual work, “making of things”, carpentry, fighting, “making” love and movies. Awareness of the simultaneity of dying and life. How transparent is this feeling …? For this transcendence, transparency, everything here its dark enough despite movement and glowing (of course my normal, at the moment very difficult, human life gives me resonance or space for this. Anyway, space is a central theme… especially in the dark).
The wrestling show acts as a framework and allocation to face death and honor it at the same time. On the front of the trousers of the costume which the fighter rinses out during the course of the film in a brittle, brown plastic bowl, light, softly splashing water, falls directly on the penis of the silent fighter, stitched a skull from pailletes.
It continues just as great, but slowed down. People lose themselves during the movie in an attempt to satisfy their desire. Riding their mopeds, standing on streets, they abandon themselves while hanging up laundry in the blowing wind of a big city and also disappoint each other. There is almost no room for bitterness and sadness in front of rather unkitschy beauty, but there is room for all kinds of feelings. Seeing faces, resting, exhausted, as if freed from thoughts, remains “as such” a pure pleasure.

Debate after the screening: ANMUT IRREAL

Is it the theme of the evening or just my parallel feelings?
Anyway: “Stunning Beauty” is a “no go” in film critism, says the fine, eloquent Dennis Lim. He means something different than I do when I say that the similarity of people to each other is beguiling in repetition and after a certain period of time. Is recognition or “reflecting oneself” already beauty? Is the queen of Snow White the most beautiful in the country because she simply has a mirror? We, because we are able to make films? Does that explain why I love the word “glisten” so much?
Knowledge that starts in the eyes.

How is it possible that technology in which pictures are so technically beautiful creates this transcendence? This refers to the big screen in context: film as a controlled dream works? The scepticism towards digitalization—yes, I still had—is completely wiped away, which does not mean that technology can do magic, but that the ghosts of art are alive.
…speed between distance and time.
There would still be a lot to say here. The way the conversation is conducted is as simple as it is ingenious, everyone gets to speak for a long time, at last once and is not interrupted. Each can breath between their sentences.
Questions are asked respectfully and are soemtimes even funny.
Words are falling and never make it exactly, like good decisions-.

Elegance as a concept of work in itself, not as a concept of work
film as art of choice
„La Cienaga“ again…
„Beauty of Actors is a disease“ says the gorgeous because vivid filmmakers of Los Fantasmas. A typical documentary filmmaker somehow, one of those people who have their hearts set on purpose.
